Required certifications: Servsafe
Cooking shift leaders will be required to take a food safety test for food managers called ServSafe. It does require some studying to pass the test. If you take the exam with us, we waive the $35 fee and you will be certified for 5 years. It can also open up employment opportunities in the foodservice industry.
Role description: Cooking shift leaders can lead solo or in pairs. You will get trained and for the first few shifts, you can request to lead with someone more experienced to further your basic training. During the shift, you will lead 7-10 volunteers in preparing 50-60 individually packaged meals. It includes dividing student volunteers up into groups, giving each group a task to do, supervising, and answering questions as necessary. Once the meal-cooking part is finished, you & the volunteers will pack and store the food, as well as clean the kitchen. Although you do need some basic cooking knowledge, you do not need to be a "gourmet chef" or anything fancy. If you need help with meal ideas, we can work with you to create an idea. We also have a cooking shift leader GroupMe as a resource.
