Interested in becoming a shift leader?

If you are interested in being trained to become a cooking, recovery, and/or delivery shift leader, please read the information below. Afterward, fill out the application.

Please note: the application is your expression of commitment. Therefore, if you have any questions, email us before you apply. We look forward to working with you!

Cooking

Required certifications: Servsafe

Cooking shift leaders will be required to take a food safety test for food managers called ServSafe. It does require some studying to pass the test. If you take the exam with us, we waive the $35 fee and you will be certified for 5 years. It can also open up employment opportunities in the foodservice industry.

Role description: Cooking shift leaders can lead solo or in pairs. You will get trained and for the first few shifts, you can request to lead with someone more experienced to further your basic training. During the shift, you will lead 7-10 volunteers in preparing 50-60 individually packaged meals. It includes dividing student volunteers up into groups, giving each group a task to do, supervising, and answering questions as necessary. Once the meal-cooking part is finished, you & the volunteers will pack and store the food, as well as clean the kitchen. Although you do need some basic cooking knowledge, you do not need to be a "gourmet chef" or anything fancy. If you need help with meal ideas, we can work with you to create an idea. We also have a cooking shift leader GroupMe as a resource.

Delivery

Required certifications: Van certification through the school

In order to drive the SA vans, which we use for delivery, students will need to be van-certified. Van certification is free and only requires going to one 3-hour class. Once you're certified, you will be able to drive SA vans for any club or organization. Google "van certification wm" for more details from W&M Student Leadership Development!

Role description: Delivery shift leaders will drive several student volunteers to 2 of the neighborhoods we serve. (We serve 4 total; we go to 2 on Tuesdays and the other 2 on Fridays). You will then direct volunteers to different homes and ensure that each family gets the right number of meals.

Recovery

Required certifications: None! Just the necessary training from us.

Role description: On Saturday mornings, you will lead a group of several student volunteers to the Farmer's Market in CW to collect donations from different vendors. Once you bring the food back to the church basement, you will weigh, record, wash (if necessary) and properly store the donations.
